About Tom Cottrell

I am a South African writer, publisher, and endurance storyteller, best known for founding the Runners’ Guide to Road Races in South Africa. A grandfather and investor, I now shape the Meaning in Motion platform, exploring purpose, resilience, and redemption. I blend road-running grit with reflective memoir and fiction. My recent book, Millwood, is a generational saga that offers practical wisdom for reinvention, sober living, and finishing well.

Antarctic Marathon – the start

“Good morning, good morning” the now familiar voice waking us for the big day. Eight in the morning and it was still dark. If ever I felt apprehension – this was it. Still on another level I was feeling alive really alive. We were all fellow adventurers, and the unknown was out there waiting.

After a light breakfast we disembarked and ferried to the base and made ready. There were a pile of instructions to remember – logistics, safety and of course respect. Penguins have right of way, so no kicking the birds around while you are running.

At Bellingshausen there is a Russian Orthodox Church, the furthest south of any Christian Church.

Part of what I present is simply pictorial – for this is a place that attacks your senses. It is big and bold, and beautiful. I am by no means a photographer; the gift comes kind courtesy Mother Nature.
