About Tom Cottrell

I am a South African writer, publisher, and endurance storyteller, best known for founding the Runners’ Guide to Road Races in South Africa. A grandfather and investor, I now shape the Meaning in Motion platform, exploring purpose, resilience, and redemption. I blend road-running grit with reflective memoir and fiction. My recent book, Millwood, is a generational saga that offers practical wisdom for reinvention, sober living, and finishing well.

Let It Be

I have several gardens at home that I tend. Some may well be the size of a postage stamp, but each gets the same care and attention to detail. Each is constructed with a specific theme in mind. They are places where I can go to and reflect. And during this anxious time it seems there nothing else to do. Reflect.

One of my smallest gardens is named ‘Let It Be.’ When I find myself in times of trouble I go there. Some may be surprised to learn that the Mother Mary in the Beatles’ song was in fact Paul McCartney’s mother. She died of cancer when he was just fourteen. The year 1968 was a difficult time for Paul McCartney. It was during the recording sessions for the White Album. Mary McCartney came to her distressed son in a dream to reassure him and to give him the inspiration for the “Mother Mary” lyric. He later said: “It was great to visit with her again. I felt very blessed to have that dream. That is what got me writing ‘Let It Be’.” Paul said in a later interview that his mother had told him “It will be all right, just let it be.”

In that quiet place my own Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom. It seems that the world has gone mad, unseen forces are moving among us, making us sick. Killing us. This is my hour of darkness and you will find me in my quiet garden. There she is, standing right in front of me speaking words of wisdom. Let it be.

The numbers are growing, the shadows are lengthening. Soon all the fearful people living in the world will agree, there must be an answer. Let it be. And even now from all those that have departed here, in Spain, in Italy, in China and the United States – the world over, there is still a chance that we will see the end. That there will be an answer. Let it be

My ‘Let it Be’ garden is peaceful now. I sit and listen to the whispered voice of my own Mother Mary. I try not let my mind be troubled, even though the night seems cloudy. But this I know – there is still a light that shines on me and it will shine on until tomorrow. Let it be.

Someday we shall wake up to the sound of music for Mother Mary came to us. She was speaking words of wisdom. Let it be. Whisper words of wisdom. Let it be. There will be an answer. Let it be.
