Storyteller · Publisher · Coach · Guide

For more than three decades, I have been associated with the Runners’ Guide. My contribution to road running was formally recognised in 2006 when I was inducted into the Runner’s World Hall of Fame. Since then, I’ve written and published guides not only for running but also for open water swimming and cycling. Along the way, I have authored a history of the Comrades Marathon, two novels, and contributed regularly to various magazines and publications. As a publisher, I’ve had the privilege of working with writers such as Don Oliver, John Cameron-Dow, Dr Lindsay Weight, and Rory Steyn.
I was South Africa’s first Run/Walk franchisee and coached numerous executives towards healthier, more balanced lives. As a motivator on the Comrades Marathon panel talks, I’ve helped hundreds of runners achieve their medal ambitions. Earlier in my career, I was part of the coaching team for a Comrades Marathon champion, gaining deep insight into the mechanics of elite performance.
As an athlete myself, I’ve completed the Comrades Marathon five times and run over 100 marathons worldwide. At 50, I set myself a unique challenge: to run a marathon on every continent within a single year. It was a celebration of endurance and discovery.
Beyond sport, I’ve served as a Hospice counsellor, working with both bereaved families and terminally ill patients. I am also in lifelong recovery from alcoholism—a journey that has shaped me deeply and allowed me to walk alongside others as they seek freedom from addiction.
Academically, I hold a commercial degree in accountancy and law from the University of the Witwatersrand. I’ve also pursued short courses at the University of Cape Town in creative writing, digital marketing, and investment management, reflecting a lifelong commitment to learning and reinvention.
